Alex Eala has a new name on her "beaten" list, and it's a good one.

At the 2026 ASB Classic in Auckland, the No. 4-seeded Eala faced No. 5 seed Magda Linette in the first round — a match that, on paper, could have gone either way. On court, it was a three-set war that Eala won through sheer competitive fire.

The Match

The first set was a chess match. Eala found her range early but had to work for every game, eventually edging ahead 7-5. Linette, the experienced Pole, isn't the kind of player who hands you anything — every point was earned.

When Linette leveled at one set apiece with a 6-4 second set, the match became a test of nerve. And nerve is exactly what Eala has built over years of competing at the highest levels of junior and now senior tennis.

In the decider, Eala was the sharper player. A 6-4 third set — and a career-first victory over Linette — sent her into the quarterfinals.

The Quarterfinal

The QF brought Wang Xinyu, the tournament's No. 7 seed, and the run ended there. But the story of this tournament for Eala was the Linette win — a quality victory against a quality opponent that proves her level continues to rise.

What It Means

Every player collects "first wins" on their way up. First top-100 win. First top-50 win. First seeded win. These moments are the building blocks of a career. Eala's first win over Linette — a player ranked comfortably on the WTA tour — is another brick in the wall.

The 2026 season is two matches old, and the foundation looks solid.
