Alex Eala’s Washington week has gained a second storyline: a reunion with Venus Williams.
The Mubadala DC Open and the WTA have announced that Eala and Williams are set to team up in women’s doubles. It will be their second tournament together—and their first as a pair on hard courts.
That makes this more than a repeat of Rally.ph’s existing singles preview. Eala is also entered in the Washington singles draw, but doubles adds a separate reason for Filipino fans to follow her week: another high-level competition alongside one of the most accomplished doubles players in tennis history.
A partnership with some history already
Eala and Williams first joined forces on grass at Bad Homburg in June. Their run reached the quarterfinals before ending against Tereza Mihalikova and Olivia Nicholls.
Washington now moves the partnership onto a new surface. The Mubadala DC Open is a WTA 500—a high-level stop on the women’s tour—played on hard courts. The women’s event runs from July 27 to August 2 in Washington, DC.
The change of surface gives the reunion a fresh edge without turning it into an entirely new beginning. Eala and Williams already have one tournament of shared competition behind them. This time, they can build on that experience during the opening stage of Eala’s US hard-court swing.
What Williams brings to the team
Williams’ doubles record gives the pairing its scale. The WTA credits her with 22 doubles titles, including 14 Grand Slam women’s doubles championships won with her sister Serena Williams. The sisters also won three Olympic gold medals in doubles.
Those achievements make Williams an exceptionally accomplished partner for Eala. They do not, by themselves, prove that Williams will serve as a coach or mentor—and neither player has made an official statement about that role for Washington.
The value we can see is in the announced team: Eala, a 21-year-old Filipina who recently reached a career-high No. 28 in singles, will share another tournament with a champion whose doubles career spans titles at all four Grand Slams. That puts Eala in an eye-catching partnership while giving her a second competitive track alongside singles.
For Eala, the doubles run also means added high-level match exposure early in the US hard-court swing. It would be a leap, however, to promise that the extra matches will improve her singles results or ranking. Washington will tell its own story once play begins.
What Filipino fans still need to wait for
The doubles draw has not been published, so Eala and Williams do not yet have an official opponent, draw position or match schedule. No source checked for this update assigns them a seed, either. That means they should not be described as seeded or unseeded.
There is also no official order of play for their first match. Rally.ph will add the Philippine date and time once the tournament releases a schedule; until then, any matchup or viewing time would be guesswork.
The partnership itself has been announced by both the tournament and the WTA, although entries can still change before the draw is published. For now, the clean update is this: Eala and Williams are set to reunite in Washington, this time on hard courts, with another chance to see what their intergenerational partnership can become.
