No. 8 seed Alexandra Eala beat British wild card Mika Stojsavljevic 6-1, 6-2 in 75 minutes on Monday to reach the round of 16 at the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo (WTA 500).
The WTA framed it as a meeting of former US Open girls' champions — Eala in 2022, the 17-year-old Stojsavljevic in 2024. Eala, world No. 20, faced World No. 411 on Center Court.
Stojsavljevic hit 24 winners to Eala's 8, but made 41 unforced errors, WTA figures show. Eala landed 68% of her first serves and won 72% of those points. She faced break points in only one game — escaping 0-40 in the second game of the second set with two service winners — and held all eight of her service games.
"I think it was super important today to be focused on every single point. Playing against Mika for the first time was a great experience and I'm sure we will meet many, many more times," Eala said after the match, Philstar reported.
Next is Australia's Talia Gibson, a Singapore finalist, in the round of 16 on Wednesday, Oct 28. Gibson beat qualifier Daria Kasatkina 6-0, 7-5 in an all-Australian first round on Monday. Rally will post the PH time once the order of play is out.
Eala is in singles only after withdrawing from Tokyo doubles earlier Monday with Fil-Am Desirae Krawczyk.
